The industrial landscape in India is changing rapidly. Therefore, it is important for the workforce in India to increase as well as adapt to the changing industrial environment. Unfortunately, a major part of Indian workforce does not have the required skills for getting decent employment and improving their economic condition. Even though it is estimated that the largest share of new jobs in India is likely to come from the unorganised sector, most of the training programmes cater to the needs of the organised sector. So, the right balance between higher education and skill development needs to be struck to meet the challenges.
Skill development is a means to harness the human resource potential of a region. It is done by equipping the potential or existing members of the workforce with marketable skills through vocational or technical training to meet industry requirements. Today, jobs are progressively becoming more skill-intensive due to the increasing complexity of economic activity, which has led to skill shortages on the one hand and unemployment on the other. Therefore, skill development, in the present scenario, emphasizes on demand-driven systems for skill acquisition.
